SHE HAD COTTON HANGING FROM HER SKIRT

CAROLYN BAYLISS, 2010

"She had cotton hanging from her skirt" stands at around 5ft 5in and considers anorexia, an eating disorder.   The piece has a hollow waist which is disproportionate to the legs hanging from it. This could be the perceived body size meeting with the real body size.

Eating disorders can include the smallest of detail.

Years ago I heard a woman talking about another woman saying "she had cotton hanging from her skirt". This "description" was used to criticise and made me realise how we may scrutinise each other and pick up on tiny imperfections (often of no significance) which we may then use against each other.

Hence the name for the piece.
